NAOSH Week 2008

Time: 4:30 PM

Event Location & Address: 631 Fisgard Street
Victoria

Hosting Organization: CAPITAL REGION HOUSING CORPORATION

Event Description: Our NAOSH Week events for this year focused on raising awareness of NAOSH Week within our workplace and within our community.
April 22, 2008 a fire drill was organized for the children who attend the Victoria Chinese Public School, across the street from our workplace. The children attend school after regular public school hours and have not had the opportunity to practice fire safety in the building. They were also encouraged to participate in a safety poster contest and on the 22nd the Victoria Fire Department carried out a drill to evacuate the school and then gave the children an opportunity to speak with firemen and investigate the fire trucks. The drill was very successful with 55 students and 5 staff members participating. We have also coordinated a bilingual fire safety plan to be created and will be mounted in the school for future use and training.
May 5, 2008 marked the kick off of NAOSH Week and to celebrate the three countries participation we engaged our staff in a Cinco de Mayo celebration. The event included a pinata filled with safety prizes (first aid items, whistles, flashlights, flashing safety arm bands, lifesavers and more), tortilla chips, salsa and mock tequila shooters. It was very well received and attended by the staff, improving their enthusiasm for the week's events to follow.
May 8, 2008 An awards ceremony for the children from the Chinese Public School was held. The NDP MLA Rob Flemming, CRD CAO Kelly Daniels presented first, second and third prizes with each child receiving a participation gift. After speaking with the children about the importance of safety and sharing what they have learned with their families, they are now better prepared to respond in the event of an emergency. The children showed their thanks with a Dragon dance and Tai Chi Fan dance. The wrap up of the evening included a pizza and juice party.

Stay Safe

Time: 8:00 AM

Event Location & Address: Unit 2A 20097-92A Ave

Hosting Organization: Valley Traffic Systems Inc.

Event Description: We are a traffic control company so our employees work at various locations on a daily basis which makes it difficult to organize an event at one location at any given time. To overcome this hurdle we have come up with our green ribbon campaign in memory of a wonderful and loved employee and co-worker who was tragically killed in a work-related incident. All our employees have received a fluorescent lime green ribbon to hang from their car's antennas with the text: Valley Traffic Systems -Stay Safe-. Stay Safe is what Terry the deceased used to say every morning to his fellow co-workers and crew. The green ribbon is a reminder to all that he will be missed and that safety is always a priority.

A Local Lunch and Learn (NAOSH/ OSH)

Time: 12:00 PM

Event Location & Address: 550 Lakeshore Dr. NE
Box 100, Stn Main
Salmon Arm, BC V1E 4S4

Hosting Organization: Ministry Of Children and Family Development - office

Event Description: Our first ever participation in the NAOSH week events occurred this afternoon as a Local Lunch and Learn. Approx 22-25 employees participated (professionals / practitioners in the Social Helping Service - Social Workers, Mental Health, Youth Probation, Resource Workers, Team Leaders, and Admin Support)... that is approximately 75 % of our staff participating (100 % of those who were working in the office today).
Promotion of the OSH event was done with a number of signs strategically placed around the office; a creative email (with all of the quiz answers hidden in the note); the Wellness Matters newsletter and other information was provided (Bananarama banana health facts). NAOSH / OSH website information provided.
We had a healthy meal of deli sandwiches/wraps, veggies and fruit platters; a selection of juice beverages. Information was posted about OSH / NAOSH activities and events, a 16 question quiz was designed (fun, learning) the contents of the emergency preparation duffle bags -revealed, reviewed, and identified. OSH recruitment needs were identified and members requested for the local OSH; reminders / policies were discussed informally along with the quiz, therapeutic gel stress balls were given to each participant (participation prizes) and a DARWIN AWARDS book (representing everything NOT OSH) will be awarded as a door prize later in the week - for either 1) joining the local OSH committee; or 2) for offering the best suggestion (as determined by OSH members).
The OSH committee now has a new and favourable involvement in our government office... today's Local Lunch and Learn was a big part in raising OSH awareness. We look forward to new activities, additional committee members, and some pending training. (our event ran from 12-2 pm).
This Lunch and Learn event was done with a limited budget ($250) for food, prizes, and a few regional wellness coordinator donations. Staff participation was higher than anticipated.
- we had a number of the quiz responses returned and the answers were informative, and a spring-board for future events.
- photos were taken and they will be submitted separately. photos will also be posted on the OSH board.
Just for fun we made signs and did a comparison regarding:
- the emergency meals and water rations(from the emergency preparedness kits) ie. meal that we were offered (no takers) and
- the ordered /catered deli meals that we enjoyed, ie. meal that we ordered..(no leftovers)

photo submissions will be sent in separate email
