Time: 11:30 AM Event Location & Address: Loewen 77 Hyw. 52 West Steinbach, MB R5G-1B2 Hosting Organization: Loewen Event Description: We have planned events for every day of NAOSH week. Monday we are kicking it off with a PPE fashion show at lunch time, Tuesday we are having local vendors that sell health and safety related items, come in and set up displays for our employees to get information and talk to the vendors. Also on Tuesday we have MPI coming out with their roll-over machine, which demonstrates what happens in a vehicle rollover if you are not wearing your seat belt, and we are hoping to have the Road Safety pedal go-cart activity running in our parking lot, which shows the affect of drinking and driving. On Wed. we are hosting an information session on Hearing Conservations. This will be open to all businesses in the Steinbach area, they will be invited to send leaders, H&S reps or Safety Committee members. On Thursday we are having SAFETY MAN, one of our group leaders, go around our manufacturing plant and hand out prize draw tickets to employees who are working safe (examples; wearing a hard hat and roping off area when raising a load with a lift truck, wearing the right PPE to work with compressed air), he would explain to them why they were getting the ticket to encourage them to continue to do their job in a safe way. Friday we will be doing prize draws to complete the week. We are putting out safety related crossword puzzles and word searches throughout the week, just for fun and information and are hoping to have the city of Steinbach raise the NAOSH Week flag at the post office on Main Street. Safety & Health: A Commitement For Life! How Safe Are You? |
|
Time: 05:00 AM Event Location & Address: Maple Leaf Fresh Foods 6355 Richmond Ave East Brandon, Manitoba R7A 7M5 Hosting Organization: Maple Leaf Fresh Foods - Brandon Event Description: Event Descriptions: • The committee wanted to focus on 3 ideas that they felt were important to reinforce to everybody. The 3 ideas have been turned into booths. The 3 ideas or booths are: 1. Food Safety 2. Bike Safety 3. Floor Safety The 3 booths that we have through out the week will be manned or stationed by our Health and Safety Captains or Black Hats (hourly unionized safety representatives). These employees are the ones who have done all of the research on the topics, using our department (Health &Safety) as a resource and for guidance. The booths will be set up for the whole day and will be staffed during the start of our day (06:00 hrs), at lunch time (12:00 hrs) and again at supper (20:00 hrs), and at shift change for sanitation starting (22:30 hrs). They will be staffed for at least half an hour at each specified time. • All hourly pay stubs will have a message on them promoting NAOSH week with the date and this year’s slogan. A reminder of NAOSH week will be put on all pay stubs the week prior. The main message and the slogan will run for the first two weeks of the month. • Employee wellness day – is the whole day being dedicated to the employee’s, their wellness and their benefits. Our goal with the Wellness Awareness day is to provide our employees an opportunity to meet and better understand the various health professionals, services, and clinics available to them. The goal for this was to give them (the employees) a chance to focus on good health, prevention and overall wellness! • A daily informational email - This is being sent out to all salaried staff (170 people) to provide them with some information about NAOSH Week... Did you know facts... This is being sent out starting 10 days before NAOSH Week. Using this tool to educate the supervisors and also provide them with some information as to what the committee has planned for events for the week. A secondary goal that will come from this day has been for health professionals to come and tour our facility and attain a better understanding of the work environment that our employees are performing in. The committee feels that this can have numerous benefits when actually treating and interacting with our employees! Meet and greet will be hosted allowing those that choose to attend the opportunity to set up a display or information area for our employees to visit and ask questions. We will have translators available to help, as well as other support staff as needed. Information about the Facility & Brandon, Manitoba • Approximately 2300 hourly – unionized employees are employed. • Approximately 165 salaried employee’s • There are approximately 90,000 hogs that are processed here on a weekly basis • Brandon is also known as the “Wheat City” • Brandon’s population is approximately 54,000 people • Maple Leaf Foods is one of the larger employer’s in the area. The employee’s need to be aware of the risks associated with the work environment as well as the dangers associated at home with food handling. • Plinko board – using safety questions (answered correctly) to determine the number of chips that you get to try and win prizes with them. Questions are related to the company’s Health & Safety Policy – all questions came from the NAOSH Committee members who had to provide 25 questions each. • Dice game - two dice are used one will determine your question the other determines the category. (The 6 category choices are: 1. H&S, 2. Ergonomics, 3. WHIMS, 4. PPE, 5. About your coworkers (due to the different cultures and languages that are present at the plant, provide a chance for us to learn something about another country/culture) 6. Potpourri (your choice from the 5 categories) Tuesday, May 4, 2010 • Continue with handing out gifts to all employees and accommodating all shifts. (AM, PM, and Midnights) • Plinko board – using safety questions to determine the number of chips that you get to try and win prizes. Potpourri (your choice from the 5 categories) • Wellness Day - The Health & Safety Department, in conjunction with the Health Unit and the Union have put this event together. They have been busy sending letters to the medical community, as well as other services that are covered through the employee’s benefit program. The main reason for this is so that the employee’s know what is covered, but also to it allows people (the medical community) to come out and see some of the jobs that the employee’s do – providing them with a better understanding with the task and jobs that the employee’s here perform. A part of this event a meet and greet and lunch. After that anyone who is participating and wishes can get a tour of facility. After this they are able to set up displays and booth for the employee’s to stop and look at and ask questions. One of the confirmed groups is the Union’s Occupational Health Center out of Winnipeg. This has been directed towards, doctors (all fields), clinics, and physiotherapy, massage therapy, chiropractors, podiatrists, natural wellness, acupuncturists, ect. • We are also sending 4 Hourly employees who were either a NAOSH Committee Member or a member of the JH&SC (2 from each committee) to the SSM – Safe Work Conference that is being held here in Brandon, on May 4 & 5, 2010 @ the Victoria Inn. (1st Day of the Conference) Wednesday, May 5, 2010 • Starting with the 2nd booth of the week – Bike safety. The reason behind this booth being chosen is that in the warmer months of the year a lot of our staff relies on their bicycles as a way to getting to work. The plant is located approximately 6 KM from town. The employee’s then need to ride on the road, so educating them on proper bike safety is a key. We have also approached our local police department to come out and help us in educating the employees. Manitoba Public Insurance also has donated flashing reflectors for their bikes to be handed out at the booth. • Plinko board – using safety questions to determine the number of chips that you get to try and win prizes. Questions are related to the company Health & Safety Policy. • Dice game - two dice are used one will determine your question the other determines the category. (The 6 category choices are: 1. Potpourri (your choice from the 5 categories) • Serving Lunch/Supper – Providing a hot meal for all staff and all shifts and having the meal being served to the employees by management. This is a way for management to show their appreciation to all staff for all of the hard work that they do as well as management showing their support to the health, safety, and wellness of all employees. The meals will be served throughout the day and to all 3 of the shifts that operate in the plant (AM, PM, and midnight shifts). • Ending the work week and wrapping up the NAOSH activities by finishing with the final of the 3rd booth of the week – Floor Safety. The reason behind this booth being chosen is that there are a wide variety of people doing different jobs throughout the plant on a daily basis, allowing us to help to inform them as to how they all are required to work in a safe manner is important. Friday, May 7, 2010 • Plinko board – using safety questions to determine the number of chips that you get to try and win prizes. Questions are related to the company Health & Safety Policy. • Dice game - two dice are used one will determine your question the other determines the category. (The 6 category choices are: 1.
