NAOSH Week Educational Quizzes

Event Description: The Organizing Committee for NAOSH Week decided to extend the theme of - Start Today....Live it Everyday! - to both staff and their families. A package of information (including five quizzes on safety and health) were mailed to the residence of each employee. Employees were encouraged to invite their family members (including children/grandchildren) to complete the quizzes and return them to Thunder Bay Hydro. A special gift will be provided to all employees who complete at three quizzes with additional prizes (some supplied by our suppliers) for those who complete all five quizzes.

Safety Week Kickoff Lunch

Event Description: Our safety committee is hosting a lunch to kick off National Safety Week. All proceeds from the lunch will be donated to Threads of Life. The agenda for the meeting is to review the various safety blitzes that will occur the following week: fire drills, PPE audits, and a general housekeeping audit. We will also announce our upcoming participation in the Shoppers Drug Mart Health Watch for Business Pilot Program, where employees will be invited to participate in an 8 week health challenge, with a cardiovascular screening done before and after the challenge.

Steps for Life

Hosting Organization: Threads of Life

Event Description: Steps for Life is an annual walk designed to bring families, friends, co-workers and others together to raise the awareness about the devastating impact of workplace fatalities, life-altering injuries and occupational disease and the importance of injury prevention.

It is held the first Sunday in May as part of the North American Occupational Health and Safety (NAOSH) Week .

The walk is part of Threads of Life’s Community Action Program.
It raises awareness within communities that help is available for families of workplace tragedy as many families struggle in isolation.

It offers families an opportunity to ‘take positive action’ in a fun event as part of their healing process by walking to raise the awareness of injury prevention in their own community as well as raising dollars for support programs for families of workplace tragedy.

The walk gives corporate partners committed to injury prevention a high profile in the community and across Canada through media coverage. Every year the walk has successfully grown in participation, awareness, in-kind support and funds.

Canadian Launch of NAOSH Week 2008

Emergency Preparedness and Response - Staying Safe Means Planning Ahead

Also we have prepared examples of emergency kits (including influenza kits) that each employee is encourage to have on hand at home. Theses kits are in step with the - Is Your Family Prepared? 72 Hours - campaign from Public Safety Canada. Excellent displays, posters and banners have been developed to support the program messaging.

Can You spot the Safety Infractions

The staff were to enter the room and on a safety infraction sheet they were to write down all the safety infractions they could find. The people with the highest number of found infractions will have their name put in a draw for a membership at curves.

Daily Quizzes / Team Assist Competition / Raffle

Event Description: We had several vendors come in on different days. Every day was a theme day - Mental Health Monday, MHE Tuesday, Nutrition Wednesday, Wellness Wednesday and Fire Safety Friday. We had vendors such as Johnston Equipment, Good life Fitness, Peel Health Nurse, DEB Canada, Trainers on Site (just to name a few) come in on a daily basis - Mon-Fri. We had 3 vendors a day. We also gave out prizes for completed quizzes with questions pertaining to the days theme (along with websites and a write up with safety information). The winners received safety and health related prizes donated by the company. In addition to this event we had a safety challenge that consisted of employees filling out a team assist form for any safe act witnessed. We tabulated the number of entries throughout the week. This was a challenge between us in the Eastern and our Western counterparts - the winner getting a paid lunch.
This was a great success, incorporating fun, information, prizes and getting the associates engaged.

We stressed that safety is a daily practice and not just a 1 week event.

This was or NAOSH week celebration!

Participatory Ergonomic Interventions: Process and Implementation WEBINAR

Event Description: This free 1-hour webinar presented by Dwayne Van Eerd from the IWH will present the results of a recently completed systematic review entitled ‘Participatory Ergonomic Interventions: Process and Implementation.’ This review examines how PE interventions are conducted (process and implementation). The findings include details about important implementation issues as well as the facilitators and barriers that are reported in the literature. A previous review found some evidence for effectiveness of PE intervention while this adds important information about how to conduct PE interventions.

Spicers Belleville NAOSH Week Celebration 2008

Event Description: This is a week long celebration which includes: healthy continental breakfast each morning, healthy snacks offered to employees, customers and delivery drivers through out the week, a pair of -NAOSH 2008- labelled safety gloves will be provided to each delivery driver, health and safety related information will be made available to employees, customers and delivery drivers, employees are encouraged to participate in our health and safety quiz/trivia contest, a BBQ will be held on Wednesday May 7th for all employees where we will announce that Spicers Belleville has been awarded a Safety Award for 2007 by the NPTA Alliance, the Health and Safety Committee will be checking employee's tire pressure, windshield washer fluid and oil and will top up levels if necessary, a lunch and learn seminar on knife safety and safety awareness/office evacuation will be held on Thursday May 8th. Prizes will be given to all participants on Friday May 9th.

Event Description: Tuesday, May 6 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.: The Faculty of Medicine hosts a number of interesting kiosks in the atrium of Roger-Guindon Hall.

Wednesday, May 7 from noon to 1:00 p.m.: Official launch of NAOSH Week in room 112 of Tabaret Hall. Activities, booths and door prizes for everyone, plus a free lunch for the first 100 people. Come and join us!

During the week, scheduled stairwell inspections will be held in several buildings. Join us for one of them and your name will automatically be entered into a draw.

Employees who conduct workplace inspections in their own area or in a public area and provide an inspection report signed by their supervisor will also be automatically entered into a draw.

This is an excellent opportunity for employees to do a - spring safety blitz - in their work environments and to learn more about health and safety prevention. They'll learn practical theories and can win interesting prizes.
