Steps for Life - Walking for Families of Workplace Tragedy

  • Event Description: Steps for Life is a 5 km fundraising walk to help support families who have suffered from a workplace tragedy, while raising community awareness of the need to prevent future workplace injuries, illnesses and deaths. This national event is a fun and family-friendly way to educate your community and support those affected by a workplace fatality, life-altering injury or an occupational disease. Once the staff locate these items there will be a number attached to the item that they will have to record. This way it is not just writing down a location but they actually have to go and see for themselves where the item is located.

Risk Management Strategy

Health & Safety Week

  • Event Description: Health & Safety Week is started by raising the NAOSH flag and by conducting a seat belt check. Daily Walks at Lunch are scheduled for associates to participate. "Health & Wellness Fair" is planned for Tuesday May 6th. Fifteen vendors are planned to participate. Participants include, blood pressure check by nursing students from a local college, Canadian Blood Services, Cancer Prevention, Employee Assistance Program, personal trainer, yoga instructor, fitness instructor, chiropractor, massage therapist, naturopath, road safety, and the Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons. Standard training sessions are scheduled for the week to increase health and safety awareness and to meet the Ministry of Labour requirements. A Safety Poster contest for children, grandchildren under the age of 12 is being promoted to raise the awareness of safety both at home and work. Each participant will receive a gift box of Dare Foods treats and a "thank you" certificate from the President.

3rd Annual Centre for Research in Occupational Safety & Health Conference: Mental Health in the Workplace

  • Event Description: This year's conference features include a CIHR sponsored Cafe Scientifique Event where the general public is invited to engage with a panel of experts in an open and welcoming forum, including food and drink. A keynote presentation will be offered by Dr. Kevin Kelloway, Canada Research Chair and Professor at St. Mary's University in Halifax, NS. Additionally, the conference will host an industry panel including union leaders, researchers, human resource personnel and various workers on the topic of mental health promotion in the workplace, and the use of Employee Assistance Programs.
